The Problem of Bloating
Most, if not, all of us have at one time or another experienced bloating of
the stomach, a condition in which the abdomen seems to be full and
tight even though we have not just eaten, leaving us feeling… well,
bloated.
Bloating in itself is not a disease and as such is not a major health
problem.
But bloating should not be dismissed lightly as it could be a sign or
symptom of something more serious.
For instance, if a woman experiences bloating in the area below the
stomach everyday for more than two weeks, she should immediately
see a doctor as this could be a symptom of ovarian cancer.
Of course, the above is a worst case scenario. Ordinary stomach
bloating is more of a nuisance that will usually disappear within a
matter of hours or a few days.
Bloating is caused more often than not by intestinal gas. Now the
presence of gas in the digestive system is normal. But when the
amount of gas reaches an abnormal point due to irregular digestion,
bloating sets in.
A sudden increase in fiber intake from fruits, vegetables, and beans
can also cause bloating. In such cases, the solution is simple: take
these foods off your plate and reintroduce them gradually into the diet.
By a process of elimination, you will learn which foods cause the
bloating. Immediately cut down on the consumption of such foods or
eliminate them altogether from your diet.
Sometimes bloating is caused by daily routines that we take for
granted, like eating fast, which will cause one to swallow a lot of air and
thus make the stomach swell.
Even chewing gum can cause bloating, unless you chew the gum with
your mouth closed.
Other causes include Irritable bowel syndrome, lactose intolerance,
drinking too much alcohol or carbonated drinks, low water intake and
lactose intolerance.
